The Future of the Blogs
This blog has been a staple of Fermi updates since it was released, though the posts have slowed down for various reasons. Don't worry, I've not stopped working on anything, in fact, I've been working harder than ever getting everything up and running properly!
I don't know what exactly my future plans for blogging is going to be, though I will go over the last of the plans I have right now. But please know, the blog posts are not going to stop, though where they happen and what they are will change.
This Blog
While I've posted updates here to this blog for quite a while, I don't think this will continue, at least in its current form. I think this blog is going to become a more technical blog where I post occasionally (though more often than I have been doing) about technical issues I've been having or interesting new features that I've implemented in a more deep dive sort of way. It is also likely that Fermi will no longer have its blog reader point to this blog any longer either due to it moving towards a more technical audience.
New Blogs
I think there's likely to be two new blogs, well, not necessarily fully new, but still new enough. There will be a new blog where there will be updates for Fermi, where you can find all of the new things we're adding and bugs we're squashing, though not sure if it's going to be a part of the Melody blog or a separate blog to help out with noise. These will be as frequent as the releases of Fermi, maybe a pinch more often if there's something major being added. Harmony updates will continue to be released there.
There will also likely be a "this week in Harmony/Fermi" style blog where we go over the cool junk we've been doing in our software stack. Honestly outside of us Maintainers, who has time for keeping up with everything via codeberg? This blog may also include cool stuff our community is doing, though there is currently no solid plans in place for this yet. We currently have an open issue if you wish to contribute ideas. I've not fully decided the exact time period of these updates happening, or where exactly these will be published, but I have decided that it will eventually happen. There is also the question of when exactly to talk about new features, as some features that are coming sometimes get stuck as an un-merged PR for a few weeks before they get reviewed and merged.
Did You Say Releases?
Yes, just like Harmony, Fermi will begin to have releases soon, currently there's a test release on codeberg called 0.0.1, though that was just created for testing, the first real release will happen once we sort out new hosting for Fermi, and drop the github. Just like Harmony, Fermi will stick with 0.X.Y until we feel it's some sort of "ready" though it'll likely get a 1.0.0 release along side Harmony, instead of them being independently released.
We want to be a reliable piece of software fitting everyone's needs so we're seeking to improve everything about our stack. Getting versioned releases out helps people who wish to host Fermi and Harmony themselves, and helps users get more stable versions of the software.
Changes
We've since moved over to codeberg both for hosting the site, and hosting the git repo this blog is based on. We're going to work towards becoming fully independent from github, which sadly means the current comment system will not continue to work given it uses github, though I am not at all surprised. Maybe I can get something working with codeberg instead, though I have my doubts that there's something out there for this purpose. I might look into this for comments, as Mastodon comments seem like a great solution for this or something similar. Open an issue if you have any ideas
Donation Links
I'm going to try to keep the donation page links well linked across our pages, like linking to the Fermi page with donation info or the badge with a link whichever is more applicable. Hopefully this can keep Fermi and Harmony going strong into the future.
A Goodbye to the Fermi Blog Reader
After this post I'm going to go ahead and disconnect the reader from this blog before the next post. I will likely hook it up to the major announcements blog, and maybe have options to connect it to at least the week in blogs, if not here as well. (maybe I'll let you input custom RSS feeds, we'll see) It'll be sad to have it go, though it'll just change, showing more relevant information to y'all, and keeping you more up to date.
